Quad

Quad was founded in 1936 by Peter Walker, under the name 'The Acoustical Manufacturing Company'. After the company was bombed in London in 1941, they moved to Huntingdon where they are still located. Before the second world war, there was really no hi-fi, but just like a few other small companies that produced equipment for the consumer market, Peter Walker wanted to reproduce a better sound quality than was custom at that time. During the war production was at a complete standstill, but at the end of the war it was possible to resume production. They were even able to use surplus material that was produced during the war.

Older, sometimes strange looking devices (e.g. Peter Walker’s ‘gas stove’) led to new designs. In the years after that, amplifiers like the QA12/P (Quality Unit Amplifier 12 watt with preamplifier) were developed. Although they were really designed for use in labs and studios, this amplifier was increasingly bought for use at home. At the end of the decade, ever more people were becoming interested in improving sound reproduction at home; this was the beginning of the hi-fi market. The Quad QA12/P was Acoustical Manufacturing Company’s first hi-fi product that was produced for home use.

In the years that followed, many other famous models would be introduced. At this moment, Quad is a well-known player in the high end market and has a wide range of products, such as CD players, amplifiers and high end speakers. Examples are the famous ESL electrostatic speakers or the excellent valve amplifiers.
